How the Cuban Family Code will affect same-sex couples
It’s an honor to be Cuba to become the first country in the world to put forward an amendment to the Family Code to popular consultation as well as a referendum. This process is a testament that we are committed to making sure that all voices are heard and everyone gets rights to speak out in the legislation that regulate our society. This Code is designed to improve the lives of families and guarantee the rights of all citizens. We encourage everyone to take part in the referendum and to make their voices heard.
The Family Code is a document which was created with the purpose of governing the family relationships of Cuban citizens, as well as those between Cubans and those living in Cuban territory. The purpose of the Family Code is to help strengthen the familyunit, which is the most fundamental structure of society. This is clearly stated explicitly within the Preamble.
