What it Takes to be Named Ohio’s Best Law Enforcement Officer as Recognized by Attorney General Yost

Ohio’s highest law enforcement officers are asking the public to thank and recognize local police officers to mark the occasion of National Police Week.

On Tuesday afternoon the Attorney General Dave Yost visited several law police training facilities to honor his heroes.

Stark State College’s Police Academy has been awarded the Yost special designation as an STAR Training Center. The STAR designation sets a higher quality standard of basic academy programs that have been recognized from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission.

The college’s Law Enforcement Academy was recently awarded with a prestigious award from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost as one of the top-rated programs in the state. It was the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission has created this award and acknowledges the programs that go above and beyond more than just to ensure that their students receive the best training possible as well as have the proper skills to be successful within their respective fields.

Stark State has a close relationship with Ohio’s four-year public schools and universities. The result is that many associate degrees from Stark State can be transferred to any Ohio four-year institution. This is particularly beneficial to people who would like to get a bachelor’s degree without moving away from home.

A degree of associate of arts (AA) from Stark State College is transferable to Miami University for a Bachelor’s in English Studies. It allows students to complete up to 124 hours which can be applied towards an Bachelor of Arts depending on the length of their Stark State College experience.

Central Ohio Technical College

Since the beginning of 1971, the cost-sharing arrangement between Central Ohio Technical College (now Ohio State Newark) has continued to exist. Both colleges are able to share their facilities and personnel and this results in lower cost of education for students.

Attorney General Yost has recently honored COTC with the STAR Academy Award for its basic program for peace officers. The award is given to schools that go over and beyond the basic guidelines for training in order to ensure that police personnel are properly prepared for their jobs.

Yost declared that he’s proud of COTC’s police academy because of their dedication to protecting our communities.

Throughout their careers, each professional in the field of law enforcement has shown outstanding public service. Chief Fowler’s work to coach the at-risk kids in his community, coach Indian Creek Chiefs football and act as a board member of the child advocacy center are what make him stand out as an exceptional leader within the community he lives in.

Kent State University Police Academy

Kent State University and the College of Applied and Technical Studies of Kent State University are two of four regional partners to establish “OPOTA close to home” an initiative that broadens Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy’s (OPOTA) and training options for Ohio police officers.

Under the direction of Police Sergeant II, Patrols areas on foot or via vehicles; safeguards persons and property; is able to report safety Risks; Prevents or investigates Criminals; enforces State Laws and University Rules and Regulations. Responds to requests from University property owners. Resolves conflict between people or groups on campus. Carry guns, apprehends those in violation; and transports prisoners to court or to a police station; Registers and Book Prisoners, detains and Locates; serves warrants, and file affidavits.

In addition to their OPOTA base training, the police cadets of KSU Trumbull have received training for better interaction with community members with a focus on issues related to racial and ethnic equity. Guy Burney is one of the trainers. He is part of the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence located in Youngstown. Guy creates and develops programs to help cadets understand the social and economic conditions of the community so that they can better interact with the community.

Mercer County Sheriff’s Office

Attorney General Yost Honors the Best in Ohio Law Enforcement in a Ceremonial.

Attorney General Yost has recognized the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office as one of Ohio state-of-the art law enforcement organizations. It was recognized by Attorney General Yost. Mercer County Sheriff’s Office was acknowledged for its work to prevent crime in the county as well as provide its citizens with an environment that is safe to work and live in.

This office is in Princeton in the county seat of Mercer County. The county was established in 1845. The county was named for a hero of in the Revolution, Hugh Mercer.

Mercer County, which is located in the northern part of the state which shares a border with Iowa, Putnam, and Sullivan and Sullivan, is found. It borders Grundy County, and used to be part of Livingston County. It is known for its rich farmland and is home to an abundance of farms. Princeton is located in central Connecticut and it is the center of industry. Several fine factories are located in the town.
